CALORIFIC VALUE OF WOOD

calorific value of wood

wood differences

what kind of wood is better?

The calorific value of wood means the energy output of each cubic meter (volume) and kilogram (mass).

Maple

Maple is a versatile tree species. Its wood is excellent for making furniture. It is relatively rarely used for heating.

Heating value: 1900 kW⋅h/m3 and 4.1 kW⋅h/kg.

Birch

Birch firewood is often used for a fireplace because this wood, if dry, does not produce sparks. The flame burns with a light blue hue and has a pleasant characteristic smell. Birch has about 85% of the calorific value of beech. By weight, it is about 105%. The disadvantage of birch is high soot formation. Drying time: 1.5 years.

Calorific value: 1900 kW⋅h/m3 and 4.3 kW⋅h/kg

Oak

A very good wood for heating. Its main disadvantage is the difficulty of splitting. Due to the high tannin content oak firewood needs to dry longer than other types of wood. Tannin requires a high temperature to burn, which can only be achieved if the wood is well dried. Oak firewood needs more oxygen for burning than, for example, beech. Drying time: 2.5 to 3 years.

Heating capacity: 2100 kW⋅h/m3 and 4.2 kW⋅h/kg.

Alder

Alder is a deciduous tree with low heating value. Its advantage is its low soot formation. Alder, even freshly cut, burns relatively well, but it is not recommended for heating. Drying time is 1.5 years.

Calorific value: 1500 kW⋅h/m3 and 4.1 kW⋅h/kg.

Ash

Ash wood has a very good heating value, similar to oak and beech. However, ash logs are difficult to split, so ash is not as popular as a heating material. But due to its high density and hardness, it is considered a noble type of wood. Drying time: 2 years.

Heating capacity: 2100 kW⋅h/m3 and 4.2 kW⋅h/kg.

Pine

Like all coniferous trees causes sparks when burning, so it is optimally suited for burning in closed stoves. Larch wood ignites easily and splits easily, so it is excellent for kindling. Pine, like all types of soft wood burns very quickly and unevenly, this is due to the low density of this wood.

Heating capacity: 1700 kW⋅h/m3 and 4.4 kW⋅h/kg.
